  • I created this project for an Illustration course during my undergraduate program at Truman State University. For this task I was expected to re-imagine an album of my choosing, for which I chose my favorite album of the year (2018), “Sweetener” by Ariana Grande. It was required that the album be displayed in CD, Vinyl, and Mobile formats and any use of the human form in the new image was prohibited.

I incorporated themes and elements from the album’s accompanying music videos and marketing materials into my new design. Specifically, I tied in Ariana Grande’s references to angels, religion, and space that were seen in the videos for her songs “God is a Woman”, “No tears left to cry”, and “Breathin”. I also used the sugary, pastel, color palette that was part of the album’s branding. Together, these elements emphasize the themes of purity, ethereality, playfulness, and loss of innocence that are addressed in the Album Sweetener.

For the physical display I emphasized the experience of viewing the album on a mobile device by using photoshop to insert my design into a picture of the Spotify app on my own smart phone. I painted reflections and shadows on the image to mimic the reflections on a phone screen and I sanded the edges of the foam core so the finished object would feel like a real phone when held.

  • For this project I illustrated an album cover and designed inner lining panels for the debut album of the extremely talented contemporary jazz quartet, 2% Jazz. This project required a quick turn-around to get the album to print on time after the band approached me when they had to find an artist 3 days before the visual components of the album were due.

The album cover and inside panels reflect two possible meanings of the name 2% Jazz, depicting a nearly empty glass of spilled 2% milk and a series of pie charts displaying 2% of their total value respectively. Below are three of the cover variations that I created with the band’s only request in mind, “Make it weird.”

  • Every year for the winter holidays I make a unique set of ornaments for my friends, family, and colleagues. The theme and material of these ornaments change annually. For 2021 I decided to create digital illustrations of my loved ones pets and stockings for those who did not own one.

Each illustration was created using Procreate, laid out to maximize printing space using InDesign, hand cut using an exacto knife, and assembled.

  • This is an illustration that I created as part of a practical task for a previous role that I applied for.

For this task I was asked to create a digital image of a cat eating sushi that reflected the company’s style.

After researching examples of their work, I set out to make the image displayed below. There seemed to be a heavy influence from anime on their work, particularly the Chibi style. This led me to focus on simple rounded shapes with cute elements. I also made sure to incorporate their minimal use of highlight and shadow, along with a varied line weight.

This illustration was created using Fire Alpaca and a drawing tablet.

  • This is another piece that I created for the illustration class that I took in college. It was one of my favorite assignments!

For this task I was asked to create a header image for a pretend local newspaper to accompany their headlining article about things to do in Kirksville. The publication would be printed in grayscale.

I gathered reference images that featured notable local land marks, wild life, and activities that the town was known. I used this collage of imagery to draw a dynamic illustration in Fire Alpaca using my drawing tablet.
