7 Tips for Commissioning a Custom Painting You’ll Love
Tips for Commissioning a Custom Painting
Hi there! So you’re thinking about commissioning a custom painting—awesome! Whether it’s a portrait, abstract piece, or something a bit more unique, getting custom art is a super personal way to bring creativity into your life. As someone who loves working on commissions, I’ve put together a few tips to help make the whole process smooth and fun!
1. Let’s Chat About What You Want
When it comes to commissioning a painting, the process works best when we’re both on the same page. Be as clear as possible about your ideas, whether you want a realistic portrait, some cool abstract elements, or a mix of both. The more details you can give me upfront, the better! This way, I can really understand your vision and make sure I’m creating something you’ll love.
2. Reference Photos Are Key
If your commission involves a specific person or object, please send over reference photos when we start. It’s super important that these photos have good lighting and capture the subject at the right angle—no shadows hiding details, please! And, of course, make sure the photos aren’t licensed or belong to someone else—I want the art to be 100% unique to you!
3. Payment: 30-50% Upfront
I ask for 30-50% of the payment upfront before starting any commission. This helps cover supplies and holds your spot in my queue. The rest is due when I’ve finished the piece and you’re happy with it!
4. Patience Makes for the Best Art
Since I also have a full-time job, I do ask for longer deadlines. Good art takes time, and I want to make sure I’m giving your piece the attention and love it deserves. So, if you’re looking to commission something, keep in mind that the process might take a little longer—but I promise it’ll be worth it!
5. Expect Some Sketches First
Before diving into the final piece, I usually do a few sketches to make sure we’re aligned. This is the best time to give feedback or make adjustments so we can nail down the composition. After that, I’ll get to work on the real thing, and it’ll be full steam ahead!
6. Trust the Process
One thing to remember is that you’re commissioning me for my style, not to copy someone else’s. I love mixing realistic portraits with abstract backgrounds to tell stories and play with details, like reflections in metal or unique textures. So trust the process, and let me bring your concept to life in my way!
7. Stay in the Loop
I’m all about keeping you in the loop, so if you have any questions or want to check in on progress, just let me know! I’ll always make sure you’re happy with the direction things are going.
